What is volumetric weight?

Volumetric weight (also called dimensional weight) is a weight calculated from the size of a parcel. Carriers charge on whichever is greater, the actual weight or the volumetric weight, because bulky parcels take up a lot of space on the plane even when they are light.

The formula

ePacket formula

Volumetric weight (kg) = Length × Width × Height (cm) / 5000. You are charged on max(actual weight, volumetric weight). Clothing lines (including US-Clothing) are the exception: they are charged on actual weight only.

Tips to save on shipping

  • Choose a box that fits the product snugly, with no wasted space.
  • Use thin, light packaging that is still sturdy enough for non-fragile items.
  • Disassemble or fold products where possible to reduce volume.
  • Compare actual and volumetric weight before you set your selling price.

Once you know the chargeable weight, check the rates by route for the exact cost of your order.

Frequently asked questions

Why does a light parcel still cost a lot to ship?
Because carriers charge on volumetric weight (L×W×H/5000) when it is higher than the actual weight: bulky parcels take up more space.
Is the divisor 5000 or 6000?
ePacket uses a divisor of 5000. Some Express services use 6000. Always check the rate card of the service you use.
